Mandatory use of digital Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) test certificates in Canada
Digital exemption application form for accredited veterinarians
Since December 1, 2021, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) made it a requirement for accredited veterinarians to use an approved digital EIA test certification system when submitting samples to an EIA approved laboratory. If a practice meets the low-volume exemption criteria of 10 or less tests per year, the practice owner has the option to apply for an exemption from having to use the digital system. The exemption applies to all accredited veterinarians that submit samples for testing on behalf of the practice that is listed on the application form. Practices that meet the low-volume criteria and submit this application form, will be able to submit samples using the paper form CFIA/ACIA 3937 as outlined in the Accredited Veterinarian’s Manual – Module 8.4 Equine infectious anemia. If a practice exceeds the low-volume criteria by submitting more than 10 paper submissions during the course of the year, they will be contacted by the CFIA and their exemption may be revoked.
If the practice owner applied for an exemption in previous years, and the practice still meets the low-volume criteria, they do not need to re-apply for an exemption in November 2024.
